Bundesgartenschau Kassel

The Bundesgartenschau (Federal Horticultural Show) has been held every two years in various German cities since 1951. Until 1993 it was coordinated by the Zentralverband Gartenbau e.V., from there on the Deutsche Bundesgartenschau-Gesellschaft mbH has taken over. It aims to promote the creation of green retreat and play areas in the urban area. In 1955, the third edition of the Bundesgartenschau was held for the first time in the county of Hesse in Kassel under the direction of Hermann Mattern, garden architect and professor at the Werkakademie Kassel. The venue was the Karlsaue, which again featured in the Bundesgartenschau in 1981. As part of the accompanying program Arnold Bode organized the first documenta.
