documenta urbana

The documenta urbana is a housing development in the South western part of Kassel directly at the nature reserve Dönche. It was built in the years 1980-1982 and intended to be a permanent settlement, representing a model for demonstration and exhibition purposes. The main attraction is a row of houses, the so-called building snake. The idea came from Arnold Bode, who associated the term amongst other things with a manifestation of art in squares and living quarters. After his death in 1977, representatives of the housing company Neue Heimat, the state of Hesse and the city of Kassel met to implement the idea of green living in urban areas. The driving force was Hans Eichel, then Lord Mayor of the city of Kassel and a member of the documenta supervisory board.
