Study of classical archaeology, German literature, language and philosophy and art history in Marburg, Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Bonn, Berlin and Leipzig. 1939 research assistant at the German Archaeological Institute Athens. 1941 doctorate.

1946 member of staff at the Bildarchiv Foto-Marburg, then assistant at the Archäologisches Institut der Universität Marburg. 1948-1956 curator of the collection of classical antiquities of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel. Member of Arnold Bode's "Club 53". Lecturer at the Staatliche Werkakademie Kassel. 1956 - 1963 secretary general of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. From 1964 director of the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg.

First documenta: member of the society "Abendländische Kunst des XX. Jahrhunderts e.V.". From spring 1955 head of the exhibition administration.
