Soldier in the First World War. In 1918 beginning of studies in Heidelberg, soon transfer to Munich. Study of philosophy, sociology, archaeology and art history with Heinrich Wölfflin and Paul Frank. After completion occupation as a publicist for Karls Scheffers’ magazine “Kunst und Künstler”, for the magazine “Werk” and the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”.

After the end of the Second World War, lectures, discussions, conferences and essays for the Deutscher Werkbund. In 1946 organization of a series of lectures on the “intellectual-political crisis of the present” at the university of Munich. In 1948 foundation of the discussion group of friends of the New Building in Munich, in 1954 merging into the "New Building Working Group" in the Deutscher Werkbund with the members Alexander von Branca, Erik Braun, Herbert Groethuysen, Wolfgang Fuchs, Max Hoene, Gordon Ludwig, Hans Maurer, Theodor Müller, Sep Ruf, Jakob Semmler, Gerd Wiegand and Werner Wirsing among others. From 1955 to 1964 direction of the museum „Die Neue Sammlung“ in Munich. In 1965 receipt of the Bavarian Order of Merit.
