1908 study in Munich with Heinrich Knirr and at the academy under Angelo Jank, otherwise autodidact. 1908 - 1912 stay in Munich. 1912 - 1915 artistic adviser for furnishing at the Hamburger Stadttheater with Otto Klemperer. 1913 - 1915 teacher for nude and portrait drawing at the Kunstgewerbeschule Hamburg. 1918 member of the artistic advisory board of the Volksbühne Berlin. 1919/20 teacher at the Odenwaldschule in Oberhambach.

From 1921 professor for graphics and weaving at the Akademie in Kassel. 1926 - 1928 head of the theatre class at the Bauhochschule in Weimar. 1927 - 1930 artistic adviser at the Krolloper Berlin. 1930/31 dismissed from public service.
