Stephan Hirzel

Study of architecture in Berlin and Dresden, doctorate in 1924, initially work in the studio of architect Oswin Hempel in Dresden, temporarily also with Otto Bartning. During this time in close contact with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and acquaintance with the structures of the Bauhaus in Dessau. 1928 member of the recently founded "Kunst Dienst". Until 1933, work as freelance architect. 1933 - 1936 editor of the magazine "Die Kunstkammer", 1945 art consultant in the city council of Dresden. Involved in the reactivation and reconstruction of the Deutscher Werkbund and its relation to art and craftsmanship. 1946 - 1948 professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Werkkunst in Dresden.

1948 - 1960 director of the Staatliche Werkakademie in Kassel in close cooperation with Arnold Bode. Member of Arnold Bode's "Club 53". Also member of the board of the Deutscher Werkbund, member of the working committee for the Protestant Church Building Conferences, artistic advisor to the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, chairman of the board of trustees of the Evangelische Akademie Hofgeismar and co-editor of the magazine "Kunst und Kirche".
