Study of architecture at the Breslauer Kunstakademie und der Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, graduation in 1920, master student of Hans Poelzig at the Preußische Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Subsequently self-employed architect in Breslau. From 1926 head of the Landesverband Schlesien of the Deutscher Werkbund. National fame through the organization of the Werkbund exhibition "Wohnung und Werkraum" (WUWA) 1929 in Breslau. 1930 move into one of his terraced houses in the WUWA (next to the house of his friend Oskar Schlemmer). 1947 - 1950 lectureship at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart.

From 1950 - 1958 professor of architecture at the Werkakademie Kassel. 1960 move to Biberach an der Riß to spread the word about the work of architect Hugo Häring.

First documenta: "Villa Dr. F. Schmelowsky, Jablonec 1931/32" on the photo wall "Architecture from 1905-1955" in the rotunda of the Museum Fridericianum.
