1924 - 1927 study at the Lehr- und Forschungsanstalt für Gartenbau in Berlin-Dahlem and guest student at Bauhaus in Weimar. Close contact to the Bauhaus artists Walter Gropius, Oskar Schlemmer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. From 1935 own office as an independent architect and landscape planner. 1936 - 1939 design of the Reichsgartenschau in Stuttgart. 1948 together with Arnold Bode foundation of the Staatliche Werkakademie Kassel. Until 1961 professor of landscape culture there. Involvement in Hans Scharoun's design for the new building of the Staatstheater Kassel. Member of Arnold Bode's "Club 53". 1951 responsible for the Bundesgartenschau 1955 in Kassel. 1961 - 1970 professor of landscaping and garden culture at the Technische Universität Berlin.
