Visit to the Staatliche Fachhochschule für Eisen- und Stahlindustrie in Remscheid. 1923 - 1926 study of painting at the Akademie Kassel, master student of Ewald Dülberg. There acquaintance with Karl Leyhausen, Arnold Bode and Carl Döbel, 1925 joint trip to Paris and southern France. In 1925 work as stage designer, among others for the Staatstheater Kassel.
1926 academic year in Paris, 1927 assistant of Ewald Dülberg at the Bauhochschule in Weimar, then assistant of the department of "artistic furnishing" at the Krolloper in Berlin, from 1930 head of furnishing there. After the closure of the Krolloper in July 1931, head of furnishings at the Preußisches Staatstheater Berlin.

After his dismissal in 1933 emigration to Switzerland. 1933 - 1954 head of the department of furnishing at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. 1950 lecturer at the Werkakademie Kassel. 1952 exhibition of his works at the Kasseler Kunstverein. 1952 - 1957 teaching position in the stage design class at the Staatliche Werkakademie Kassel. From 1958 member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and professor at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie. Collaboration with Arnold Bode at the göppinger galerie in Frankfurt am Main, where he had a solo exhibition in 1960. In spring 1968, development of "Klytemnestra" and "Oedipus Rex" for the Staatstheater Kassel for documenta 4.
