In 1887 drawing lessons at the Hamburger Gewerbeschule. In 1888 admission at the Königliche Akademie der Künste zu Berlin, attendance of the painting class with Ernst Hancke. 1891 continuation of study at a private art school.

1892-1909 numerous trips to Paris, Rome and London, among others. Publications of caricatures in various journals such as the „Narrenschiff“ and the „Lustige Blätter“, participations at exhibitions like the „Große Berliner Kunstausstellung“ in 1904. 1909 member of the Berliner Sezession.

From 1907 orientation towards painting: exhibition in 1911 at the Salon des Artistes Independants in Paris, 1913 at the Erste Deutscher Herbstsalon at Herwarth Waldens’ Galerie Der Sturm. 1919 member of the Arbeitsrat für Kunst, in May appointment as one of the first masters by Walter Gropius to the Bauhaus in Weimar. 1919-1925 form master of the printing company at the Bauhaus. In 1921 first publication of the Bauhaus in Weimar with a folder containing twelve of his woodcuts.

In 1924 foundation of the exhibition society „Die Blauen Vier“ with Alexej Jawlensky, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. Participation at exhibitions such as „Casseler Kunstausstellung 1922“, „Jubiläums Kunstausstellung Kassel 1927 – 150 Jahre Kasseler Kunstakademie“ and „Vierte große Kunstausstellung Kassel 1929 – Neue Kunst in der Orangerie“ on the invitation of Arnold Bode, further participations at the Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin in 1928 and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1929.

In 1937 emigration to the USA, teacher at the Mills College in Oakland, California, and at the Black Mountain College, North Carolina. In 1944 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
