Apprenticeship as a business administrator, after discontinuation of his study of art history at the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Universität Berlin with Heinrich Wölfflin and Wilhelm Worringer. 1917-1933 editor of the monthly journal “Das Kunstblatt" and numerous monographs on 20th century art. Also publication of contributions of Expressionist artists, editing various magazines and books, and work as an art critic on the radio.

1933 emigration to Paris, where he worked as a freelance employee for German-language newspapers and edited the bulletin of the Free German Artists' Association "Freie Kunst und Literatur". 1940 escape from Paris, 1941 emigration to Mexico.
