1920-1931 apprentice and municipal civil servant of the city of Kassel, joined the SPD. Distinguished with honorary doctorates in philosophy from the university of Frankfurt am Main and agricultural sciences from the university of Giessen, holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal of the State of Hesse.
