1919/20 apprenticeship at the studio of the Linz architect Georg Schmidthammer. 1921 assistant to the architect Josef Emmanuel Margold. From winter term 1921/22 to 1925 continuation of his education at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. 1921/1922 attendance of the preliminary course with Johannes Itten, March 1922 to July 1923 and from October 1924 attendance of the workshop for mural painting with Wassily Kandinsky and Oskar Schlemmer.

February 1925 journeyman's examination before the painters' guild in Weimar. 1925 appointment as young master at the Bauhaus in Dessau, April 1925 to 1928 head of the newly founded workshop for printing and advertising, parallel also design of printed matter, advertising graphics, and trade and exhibition systems. 1925 marriage to Bauhaus student Irene Angela Hecht. 1928 leaves the Bauhaus in Dessau. Until 1938 graphic artist for commercial and advertisement, painter as well as artistic director of the Berlin advertising agency "dorland", the Paris magazine "Vogue" and the magazine "die neue linie". 1930 design of the exhibition of the Deutscher Werkbund with Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy.

1938 emigration to New York. 1938 design of the exhibitions "Bauhaus 1919-1928" at the Museum of Modern Art and 1978 "50 Years Bauhaus" in Stuttgart. Occupation as painter, commercial graphic artist and exhibition designer. From 1946, work as a design consultant for the Aspen Cultural Center in Colorado. 1956 head of the design department of the Container Corporation of America. 1958 - 1961 member of the art advisory board of the Information Office of the United States of America. Since 1965 artistic consultant for several advertising agencies and department stores.

1964 participation in the exhibition "Industrial Design and Graphics" that ran parallel at documenta 3.
