room 13

At the first documenta, the whitewashed rooms of the ruinous Fridericianum created a new "white cube" atmosphere. They created the impression of a neutral platform in front of which the works stood out. In room 13, the focus was set on the plastics and sculptures by Alexander Calder, Berto Ladera and Hans Arp. Particular attention was paid to the sculpture "Konstruktion" (1937) by Bauhaus student Max Bill, which can be seen in the background in room 14. It is illuminated by the indirect incidence of light from the floor-length windows covered with plastic curtains of the göppinger plastics. Thus it becomes the visual eye-catcher of the room situation.
