1919 study at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Munich with Angelo Jank, Johann Herterich and Franz von Stuck. During this time participation in various film projects through a contact with Berthold Brecht. From 1922 stage designer at the Münchner Kammerspiele and various theatres in Berlin, 1927-1931 employed at the Krolloper in Berlin. 1924-1933 head of stage design at the Städtische Bühne Essen and at several other theatres in Berlin. Since 1931 work in music theatre and as a stage designer at various operas such as Glyndebourne, the Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Since 1934, despite the NS regime banning him professionally from working, employment at the Frankfurter Bühne because of the support by the general director Hans Meissner. From 1937 stage designer at the Deutsches Theater with Heinz Hilpert, from 1939 stage designer at the Theater in Josephstadt. 1940 employee at the Vienna State Opera. After the end of the war, work mainly at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, as head stage designer at the Berliner Ensemble, but also set designer for various theatres in Westberlin. 1954-1955 technical director at the Kammerspiele in Munich. From 1958 professor of stage design at the Akademie der Bildende Künste in Vienna. 1959-1962 mainly occupation in Cologne under the direction of Oscar Fritz Schuhs.
